Ochlockonee River Fishing

The Ochlockonee River is a 206 mile river that begins in Georgia and flows into Ochlockonee Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. The Ochlockonee River joins Lake Talquin which is actually an impoundment of the river. The Ochlockonee River has been designated as an Outstanding Florida Water by the State of Florida and features good fishing for Largemouth Bass, Striped Bass, Bream, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Speckled Perch, and Catfish. Bluegill and shellcracker fishing is excellent in the spring and summer months on crickets, redworms, and wigglers. Bass hit best in the spring and summer on crankbaits and artificial worms. Lures are more effective when fished around the many logs and fallen treetops in the river. Striped bass fishing is good periodically in the fall and early spring and live shad are the best bait to use right below the Talquin Dam. The Ochlockonee River Wildlife Management Area is located along the shore of the Ochlockonee River near Tallahassee and features many recreational opportunities. Be careful on the Ochlockonee River when water levels are low as more exposed stumps and log jams occur.
