Ocklawaha River Fishing

The Ocklawaha River flows 74 miles north from Lake Griffin until it joins the St. Johns River near Palatka. The Ocklawaha River is also joined by many of the Harris Chain of Lakes through canals and waterways and runs along the edge of the Ocala National Forest. The Ocklawaha River features good fishing for Largemouth Bass, Black Crappie, Bream, and Catfish and most anglers prefer using live shiners and minnows around structure. Bream fishing is good throughout the year on the Ocklawaha River but best during the spring and summer when they are bedding. Use small spinnerbaits or live earthworms for best bream catches. The best area is typically from the north end of Lake Griffin to where it intersects the St. Johns River. The waters on the Ocklawaha River are gin colored which make for good sight fishing conditions. Caution should be used when boating along the Ocklawaha River due to many curves, floating logs, and underwater tree stumps.
